Current Work

The consortium is currently involved in a number of programmatic efforts to meet its operational and strategic goals. The first program is generated by an alliance with the Technology Innovation Challenge Grant (TICG), Interactive Learning Consortium(ILC), administered by the Mid-central Educational Cooperative. ILC offers OSEC members:

  • Curriculum offerings for middle and high school students delivered via the states Dakota Digital Network, a synchronous audio video network installed in all of South Dakota’s public schools

  • Professional development for teachers and administrators related to the planning and delivery of curriculum at-distance. These professional development programs include a graduate level Math and Science degree jointly offered by the Oglala Lakota College and the University of South Dakota and a Curriculum and Instruction Bachelor’s degree offered by the Oglala Lakota College.

The grant also provides support for the development of technology plans and infrastructure support.

The second Oceti Sakowin program is being provided by a federal STAR Schools grant entitled Serving Native Students(SNS). This grant is administered by the Sisseton Wahpeton School Board (Tiyospa Zina Tribal School) of Agency Village, South Dakota. The SNS project has developed and is implementing an Associate of Arts program. Courses are being asynchronously delivered by Oglala Lakota College, one of the states tribal colleges, to approximately forty-eight individuals serving as para-professionals on the state’s reservations.

Also, the SNS project is in the process of implementing a collaborative process of developing k-12 physical education-based diabetes curricular standards. Approximately twenty-three Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), BIA grant schools and private schools are targeted to be included in this standards development process.

In recent months, OSEC has started to provide even more extensive services to its member institutions. Through partnerships, the OSEC provides evaluation services on a National Science Foundation Math and Science grant through Oglala Lakota College, evaluation of a 21st Century Program at Porcupine Year-Round School, and will begin the roll out of its Technology Audit services for the Pine Ridge School District.

OSEC employees are also involved in grant development and are working to create a service model for educational and assistive technology integration.
