. The
OSEC group has made some significant progress
toward completing the alternative definitions
of AYP. We have created a State Accountability
Workbook and submitted it to BIE/DOE for approval.
We also have submitted a proposal for development
of a set of assessments for the process. We
are now waiting for a response.
In September of 2008 BIE sent a Funds Distribution Document to Little Wound School for $ 980,000 for the development of a Language Assessment to determine Oral Language Proficiency in Dakota/Lakota/Nakota language. These resources are to be used to develop an assessment process/tool with associated standards that meet the requirements of ther US Department of Education Peer Review Process. These dollars will not be used for curriculum development or professional development beyond preparing language teachers to be assessors. Instituting Native Language Oral Proficiency into the AYP process allows schools to target existing Title I dollars toward language in the same manner as school improvement plans address math, reading and science.
The member schools have agreed to have Little Wound School act as the fiscal agent for this work and for the OSEC organization to manage the project. Links below are initial documentation for this process. Once a coordinator is hired, we will create a new web-page that will be used to track information regarding the assessment development.
